This interdisciplinary course investigates the confluence of forensic science and anthropology through the analytical examination of skeletal remains, crime scene investigation processes, and the broader cultural contexts surrounding these inquiries. Students will acquire skills in discerning how human remains serve as crucial evidence in reconstructing identity, understanding trauma, and estimating time of death. The course will involve a combination of public case studies, laboratory exercises, and theoretical discourse to elucidate the methodologies employed by bioarchaeologists and forensic anthropologists in interpreting biological and cultural data. Key topics will include osteology, taphonomy, forensic archaeology, and the ethical considerations inherent in the handling of human remains. By the conclusion of the course, students will be adept at critically evaluating forensic evidence and comprehending its implications within both legal and anthropological paradigms.
