Who am I? Where do I come from? Where do I belong? These existential questions lie at the heart of postcolonial experience in the Anglophone world. This course explores how 20th- and 21st-century Anglophone African and Afro-diasporic literature and film engage with these questions. Shaped by Britains colonial legacy, English-speaking Africans and Afro-descendants confront their shared history while negotiating issues of race, nation, cultural identity, gender, and sexuality. Through novels, films, and critical concepts, we will examine the perspectives of Africans from the continent and the diaspora, tracing Black Anglophones connections to both their diasporic communities and formerly colonized homelands.
