How do we know what we know? Thinking about the ways knowledge is acquired matters as much as thinking about the ways that knowledge is created. This course will explore different research methods and theories of knowledge in Africana Studies. We will explore theoretical perspectives ranging from Molefe Kete Asante’s Afrocentricity to Kimberle Crenshaw’s intersectionality and consider how these frameworks impact our perceptions of the modern world. Course materials will help us explore the methodological approaches of scholars in the field across traditional disciplines such as sociology, philosophy, history, anthropology, and literature.
